German holidaymaker dies in hospital after being caught in strong rip current

A German tourist, aged around 50, has died after being caught by the strong rip current on Fuzeta-Mar beach, on what is known as the more dangerous ‘ocean side’ of Armona island off Olhão.

The man, who had only recently arrived on holiday with his wife, was rescued from the beach by lifeguards on Tuesday and worked on by all three, as well as a nurse who happened to be passing the beach as he was dragged unconscious onto the shore.

Say reports, the man never regained consciousness.

He is understood to have been swimming outside the concession area in what tabloid Correio da Manhã describes as choppy conditions.

He was dragged by an ‘agueiro’, said the paper, describing it as a “strong maritime current”.

The man was transported from the beach by boat to the mainland where an ambulance was waiting. INEM medical support personnel were also involved.

Death was declared on Wednesday “as a result of complications due to the fact that he had been without breathing for such a long time”, explained CM.
