All eyes on Costa as he takes two-day visit to Angola

President Marcelo has called it a “unique occasion” to forge understanding between the two countries.

Prime minister António Costa’s official two-day visit began on Monday and follows a period of political impasse due to corruption allegations against Angola’s former vice president.

The trip is expected to see the signing of various agreements, particularly over the “progressive regularisation” of up to €500 million in Angolan public debts to Portuguese businesses.

Costa is accompanied on the trip by two ministers: August Santos Silva (foreign affairs) and Capoulas Santos (Agriculture), as well as various secretaries of state.

The understanding is that “new lines of credit” will be extended, with a new agreement over agricultural cooperation as part of a strategic plan to take both countries to 2022.

President Marcelo has dubbed the partnership “essential for the Portuguese position in the world, and essential for the Angolan position in the world”.

Next month, the African country’s president João Lourenço is due to visit Portugal.
