Five swimmers, of British and German nationality, who were being dragged out to sea by strong currents off Carvoeiro beach had to be rescued on Sunday (October 14).
Three of them were British, including two children aged 10 and 13 and one adult aged 40. The other two were German, aged 13 and 56.
They were apparently enjoying a swim at the beach when the strong tides started pulling them out to sea. A sixth person tried to help them but also had to be rescued by crew from maritime police and the Ferragudo sea rescue station.
All victims were taken to Ferragudo and then to Portimão hospital by Lagoa firefighters. They were conscious but showed signs of “exhaustion and hypothermia”, said Portugal’s maritime authority (AMN).
The maritime authority reminded beachgoers to take heed of weather warnings and to avoid swimming in rough conditions.
