A bypass to the EN125 road in Olhão is one step closer to becoming a reality now that the project’s environmental impact study has been delivered by the national infrastructure authority Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) to the Portuguese environmental agency APA.
The project is backed by IP and Olhão council, which say a bypass road would help channel traffic out of the town, making life “much easier” for local drivers.
Pedro Marques, Minister of Planning and Infrastructures, visited Olhão in July and guaranteed that the bypass was not forgotten and that the environmental impact study was “almost completed”.
Says IP, the new suggested bypass aims to “overcome the environmental issues that APA has targeted in other studies carried out by road concession company RAL”.
It will cost €5 million to build and is considered a “priority” among the many works that IP says it has planned on the EN125 between Olhão and VRSA in a bid to bring the road up to the standard needed in a region renowned for its “tourism of excellence”.
The proposed six-kilometre bypass will only have one lane in each direction and will make use of many already existing municipal roads. Seven roundabouts will be built along it to provide access to the local road network and also improve the accessibility of Olhão port, IP says.
A date for the start of the works has not yet been revealed.
