Algarve craft beer wins international award

Algarve Rock Brewery, based in Faro, won first prize for Stout Beer against breweries from across Europe at the International Craft Beer Festival, Trujillo, Spain, on November 4. Only brewing since February 2018, Algarve Rock has already established itself as a local favourite and is now expanding abroad.

“Craft beer is a new and booming market in Portugal and is being embraced by new local brewers and grateful consumers. Although late into the market compared with the UK or Belgium, the local craft brewers are striving hard to create high quality beers,” said the company in a press statement. “Algarve Rock is an example of how passion and flair can be transformed into beautiful tasting beers that can compete with the best worldwide.”

Neil Conchie, co-founder of Algarve Rock, said: “We are so pleased to win this award for our brewery, for the Algarve and to demonstrate that Portuguese craft beer is of superb quality.”

With 50 years’ combined brewing experience, the Algarve Rock team now plans to export worldwide and enter more beer competitions to establish Portugal as a centre for craft beer excellence.
