He believes he is “the best chance for Portugal”, and almost certainly no one will be disagreeing.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the effervescent 70-year-old whose delight in bringing hope to his countrymen and women has breathed a new lease of life into the nation’s psyche, has finally admitted that he has “a great desire” to run again.
Presidents can only serve two terms, so the next will be his and his people’s last.
The only provisos are his health (he says he needs it) and the possibility that there could be someone better – though he can’t see anyone on the horizon.
Marcelo was talking on Sunday as he left the capital of Panama where he had been taking part in World Youth Day, an event organised by the Catholic Church.
Deeply religious himself, Marcelo returns to Portugal with the ‘victory’ of securing World Youth Day 2022 for Portugal.
He told journalists, it is “a victory for the Portuguese and the Portuguese language”.
