Hundreds of small birds are being slaughtered by mechanical ‘olive harvesting’ that takes place at night in the Alentejo.
Conservationists at Quercus, the country’s oldest environmental NGO, are demanding the government outlaws the practice that involves heavy machinery and takes place during a period when birds are present in the trees, both ‘trapped’ and blinded by the lights used by tractors involved, and thus unable to flee the consequences.
