Future of EN125 roadworks “to be decided after summer”

There’s still no solution in sight for the legal tangle that has stymied the long-awaited renovations on the eastern section of the Algarve’s EN125 road.

Correio da Manhã reported on Tuesday that a “decision will only be made after summer” following the announcement that subconcession company Rotas do Litoral aims to rescind its contract with state infrastructure authority Infraestruturas de Portugal.

Cristóvão Norte, an Algarve MP for opposition party PSD, says that the good news is that “this means the government no longer has any excuses to not move forward with the renovations”.

But whether this is actually the case remains to be seen.

Infrastructure Minister Pedro Nuno Santos suggested earlier this month that the government would try to appeal against the Court of Auditors’ negative response over the renegotiation of the contract between IP and Rotas do Litoral. If the appeal is unsucessful, there are two options: renegotiating the contract (again) or taking over the works once and for all.
