Portugal is in for another weekend of hot weather with maximum temperatures set to rise tomorrow, topping 30ºC in most parts of the country and even reaching 36ºC in some inland areas.
While this may be ‘music to the ears’ of holidaymakers looking to enjoy some beach time, the weather has 20 municipalities at “maximum fire risk” this Friday:
Tarouca (Viseu), Guarda and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo (Guarda), Covilhã, Vila Velha de Ródão, Vila de Rei and Proença-a-Nova (Castelo Branco), Nisa and Gavião (Portalegre), Mação, Sardoal and Abrantes (Santarém) and Faro, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira, Alcoutim and Castro Marim (Faro).
Another hundred municipalities are facing a “very high risk” of wildfires, according to national sea and atmosphere institute IPMA.
The issue is not only the hot and dry weather, but the moderately strong winds which will blow throughout most of the country and can be critical factors in how fast a wildfire is brought under control.
