Lagos archaeological site open to visits on Thursday

The Monte Molião archaeological site in Lagos, one of the earliest vestiges of human occupation in the Algarvian town, will be open to the public on Thursday (August 22).

Researchers from the Archaeology Centre at the University of Lisbon have been carrying out digs at the site since July 15. The digs, which will continue until August 28, are financed by Lagos council.

Monte Molião is located on a hill at the entrance of Lagos along the EN125. The site used to be a fortified settlement which was occupied since the Second Iron Age, between the end of the 4th century BC and the end of the 3rd century BC.

“The domestic architectures and the abundance of archaeological materials that have been recovered during field work shows the integration of Monte Molião in the great commercial routes of ancient times and the interaction of its inhabitants with other Mediterranean communities,” the local council says.

To see the site for yourself, you only need to show up on Thursday between 9am and 1pm.
