The Royal British Legion Algarve is gearing up for this year’s annual Poppy Appeal which will soon be upon us in October.
Starting the proceedings, member Shirley Blackman is doing a tandem parachute jump from 10,000ft above Portimão aerodrome on Wednesday, October 9. When asked about the jump, Shirley said: “I shall certainly have plenty of Tena Ladies pads on that day.”
If you would like to sponsor Shirley or can go along to support her on the day, email malcolm.blackman@clix.pt
To launch the official Poppy Appeal collection, there will be a coffee morning at the Holiday Inn in Armação de Pêra on Saturday, October 26, starting at 10am.
Sponsored by the Holiday inn and Avalon Funeral plans, guests will also be entertained by Suzanne Wilson with a Wartime Singalong followed by 30 minutes of popular 60s to 80s songs. “The great-value morning with tea, coffee, hot chocolate, water, cake, biscuits, musical entertainment and a free raffle costs just €5,” say organisers.
The final event will be the 75th Anniversary of D-Day dinner dance at camping Albufeira on Saturday, November 16. For €30, guests receive a welcome sparkling wine reception, a wartime “Sing for your Supper” singalong, three-course roast dinner, water, wine and beer.
Entertainment is provided by Christopher Gee, a comedy impressionist flying in from England just for the evening, between a busy cruise ship schedule, along with local singers Suzanne Wilson and Danny Maverick.
The organiser, Colin Hearn, said: “The evening was a sell-out last year and proved to be one of the best events in the Algarve. This year we already have 177 people booked, with only eight places left to sell out again, so anyone interested should contact me now.
“Help is always needed during the Poppy Appeal, especially at Faro Airport, so if you can spare a few hours to help with the collection, you will be made most welcome. You do not need to be an RBL member to help or indeed attend any function.”
