Welsh pop singer Bonnie Tyler performed for a huge crowd of over 40,000 people on Tuesday (August 20) at Praia dos Pescadores in Albufeira – this was her first concert ever in the town that she has called her ‘home from home’ for many years. And there was even time for a duet with Sir Cliff Richard, a long-standing friend and ‘neighbour’ in the Algarve.
In an interview with the Resident in July, Bonnie had promised her fans a “90-minute show with all the old hits” and some new songs – and she did not disappoint.
The legendary singer performed many of her top hits and several songs from her new album ‘Between the Earth and the Stars’.
One of the highlights of the night was when her close friend Sir Cliff Richards, who, like Bonnie, owns a house in the municipality of Albufeira, joined her on stage for a duet.
With one of the most successful careers of any artist still performing live, Bonnie remains one of the world’s most celebrated singers. Two of her songs, ‘It’s a Heartache’ and ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, are among the best-selling singles of all-time, with sales exceeding six million each.
She has also been nominated for three Grammy Awards and has received a long list of accolades, including three Goldene Europa awards, an Echo Award, a Variety Club of Great Britain Award, a Gold Badge Award for her contribution to Britain’s Music Industry, and a Steiger Award for a lifetime career in music.
As she told us last month: “This year I am celebrating 50 years in the music business and still have such fun on stage with my wonderful band, but I never ever imagined that I’d still be in demand all over the world at my age”.
The concert was followed by an amazing fireworks’ show which marked the end of Albufeira’s Municipality Day celebrations.
Earlier that day, the local council had already awarded bronze, silver and gold medals to council employees who have worked at the town hall for at least 15, 25 and 35 years. Said mayor José Carlos Rolo, the ceremony was held to “thank” these employees and recognise everything they have done for Albufeira.
