A man wearing a hood entered the Pestana Alvor Praia Hotel in Alvor where Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was spending the night on Sunday and stole around €240 from a safe.
Police have confirmed that the man walked into the hotel’s reception at around 12.40am and threatened staff in order to rob one of the hotel’s safes.
None of the hotel’s guests – including President Marcelo – were aware that the robbery was taking place, a source from the Pestana hotel group told Correio da Manhã. The source added that the man was also not carrying any firearms but was able to escape with around €240 in cash.
President Marcelo’s spokesperson did not confirm the incident, only telling CM that the president was no longer staying at the hotel. He is understood to have already returned to Lisbon.
