News that Portugal’s deficit fell to 445 million euros in July is proof that the economy is “prepared” for current challenges, Finance minister Mário Centeno has declared.
As PS Socialist leaders gird themselves for the election trail, Centeno produced numbers indicating that tax revenue was up by 6.5% on the same period last year, while the deficit has reduced by 2.2 million euros.
Coming in the same week as ‘praise’ heaped on prime minister António Costa by the Financial Times (click here), Centeno told reporters that citizens should be “satisfied because the image of Portugal today is one of credibility and confidence”.
