New association to promote contemporary art in Lagoa

A new non-profit association has been created in Lagoa in a bid to bolster and promote contemporary art in the municipality.

It is named ‘Associação Bóia’ and was created by Carvoeiro-raised Filipa Brito and Nelson Guerreiro, a former teacher at the Caldas da Rainha art school where Filipa studied.

“We founded the association in November 2018 and were warmly welcomed by (then) mayor Francisco Martins. Our goal is to complement the local council’s arts calendar,” Filipa, 42, told Barlavento newspaper.

Filipa is the association’s president while Nelson acts as the treasurer.

Their first event, ‘Paragem’, is taking place between Thursday and Sunday (August 29 – September 1) and features an art exhibition at Lagoa’s Única wine cellar/LIR art gallery, which opens on Thursday at 6pm. This will be followed by the highlight of the event – a ride on a tourist train starting at Algar Seco in Carvoeiro on Friday at 6pm and which will include several “unexpected stops”. There will also be a second “extended” train ride on Sunday departing from Única at 5pm.

Also on the agenda for Saturday is a performance alongside the Silves Philharmonic Band at the Carvoeiro amphitheatre, at 7pm, and an “intimate” performance by actress Maria João Falcão at the Hotel Carvoeiro Plaza, running between 2pm and 6pm.
