A couple who apparently regularly walked beside the sea in Ovar drowned yesterday after the woman fell into the sea, and the man tried to rescue her.
The strength of the waves was such that despite the intervention of life-guards, nothing could be done to save them.
The man was pulled to shore by rescuers, but pronounced dead at the scene, while the body of the woman was only found, trapped between rocks, when the tide receded.
Explain reports, it was an area of coastline that is not accessible to bathers: a rocky spur jutting out to sea.
The couple, both in their 50s, is understood to have regularly walked the spot.
Their bodies have been sent for autopsy, identities kept under wraps until family members have been informed.
