The Algarve people’s love for the sea is well known and the resources it provides the local gastronomy are easily found on our restaurant tables. This time, it is Quarteira that is showcasing a local favourite – the octopus – during a week-long event (September 6-15).
The ‘Semana do Polvo’ (Octopus Week), now in its fourth year, celebrates the town’s historic link to the sea, particularly to octopus fishing.
A total of 27 restaurants are taking part, each presenting its own recipe. Classics like ‘arroz de polvo’ (octopus rice) and ‘polvo assado’ (roasted octopus) will be served alongside newer recipes including octopus tortillas and octopus in a wok.
There will also be a recipe competition open to all, a sculpture exhibition at Rua Vasco da Gama and two showcooking events.
The Rancho Folcórico de São Sebastião will also be performing at the Vilamoura Marina and in front of the Quarteira parish council on September 8 and 14, respectively.
Participating restaurants this year are: Sol e Mar; Água Salgada; A Cabana; Alphonso’s; Dallas; Frutos do Mar; La Cabane; Luna Rossa; O Marcoense; Don Alfonso; O Búzio; Ostra d’Ouro; Pic Nic; Rosa Branca; Street Kitchen; Taberna do Peixe; Thai Marina; Uniko; Sandomania; Tasca do António; Thai; Social; Thaibeach; Gosto com Gosto; Monteiro’s; Rare; and O Tapinhas.
