Baroque Ensemble Arianna to perform in Algarve in October

Ensemble Arianna, represented by its vocal section Ars Vocalis, is inviting all to “(re)discover some master pieces of the baroque era” at two concerts being performed in the Algarve next month.

The group, from the south of France, will be performing interpretations of Vivaldi’s famous ‘Credo’, Bach’s gr ea t motet ‘Jesu, meine Freude’, and Telemann’s splendid Deutsches Magnificat, spiced up with two smaller motets of the Genius from Leipzig.

These colourful pieces from the 18th century baroque, of which some are still very popular today, are rooted in and inspired by both Italy’s concertato style and Germany’s Lutheran way of composing.

The exceptional art and mastery of music genres and styles, as well as his abundant production, made Telemann the most famous musician of his time, considered to be equal to Händel, Vivaldi or Bach.

Nowadays he is the least well known of the three composers the Ensemble will be bringing its audiences, in a version accompanied by a keyboard to allow the vocal and musical qualities of the Ensemble, counting some 20 members, to shine.

The concerts will be performed, under the musical direction of Marie-Paule Nounou, also responsible for the piano accompaniment, at two locations in the Algarve: on October 19, at Ermida de N.S. de Guadalupe in Vila do Bispo, at 5pm, and on October 20, at Convento de São José in Lagoa, at 4pm.

The ensemble was founded in 2000 by Marie-Paule Nounou to explore and develop the musical heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries. The musicians are all professionals playing authentic period instruments, or else exact copies. Praised for their dedication to this music and enthusiasm to find new audiences, the ensemble has performed in many places throughout France.

In 2018, Marie-Paule Nounou, who plays the harpsichord, piano and organ, was made a Citizen of Honour of Montpelier in recognition of her achievements in promoting baroque music in that city.

Ars Vocalis was formed in 2008 to be the choral partner of Ensemble Arianna and has performed with them at a number of musical events in the south of France. They have also participated in masterclasses given by prestigious professional singers.

The concerts have the support of local association ‘O Corvo e a Raposa’ and Direcão Regional de Cultura do Algarve.

Entrance is free but contributions towards expenses are welcome.
