A total of 190 wild camping and illegal motorhoming offences were registered by GNR police and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) during a sweep of the Costa Vicentina natural park on Tuesday night (September 17).
“Wild camping and illegal motorhoming is a problem that has long been identified and which destroys habitats, some of them protected,” the ICNF said in a statement sent to newsrooms.
The institute also named the “illegal occupation” of these spaces as well as “uncontrolled waste disposal” as other issues caused by this kind of abusive parking, which can lead to fines up to €4,000.
As well as continuing wild camping clampdown operations, the institute says it is working alongside municipalities to create a project for the establishment of more campsites in the area.
The operation came around a week after the Algarve’s regional development commission reported an increase in wild camping (click here) and a few months after the association of parishes of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina Natural Park (AFPNSACV) said that illegal motorhoming and camping is “out of control” in the area (click here).
