Associação Guarda-Chuva has recently been created to support small organisations working in the Algarve on behalf of needy individuals, children and families, and animal welfare.
The charity, which will be holding a launch event on Saturday, October 5 in Tunes (read below), comprises of five sections:
Support for Families in the Algarve responds to the needs of local families and individuals struggling to buy everyday household objects, furniture, clothing and generally items that we take for granted. “Through fundraising, we pay for emergency dental treatment and spectacles for children and provide Christmas presents for children and food parcels when we can. We also work closely with the annual Back to School campaign,” said Su and Mike Davis from Support for Families in the Algarve.
Algarve Emporium Charity is a division of the online shop, Algarve Emporium. It sells items that have been donated to the online charity section but are not required by the needy people. “And I’m happy to reassure you that 100% of the proceeds are used for different charitable causes,” said Caroline Langston from Algarve Emporium Charity. “We are committed to helping needy individuals and families across the Algarve, care homes and animal charities.”
Make a Bid, Make a Difference is an online auction that has donated products or services from companies or members. When the public bid online, 100% of the proceeds go towards helping less fortunate families protect their pets from infestations such as fleas and ticks. “We also arrange for sterilisations, support animal charities and supply help in emergency situations when animals are taken to the vets due to road accidents or following an attack on an animal,” said Lynn Collins-Baldock from the charity.
Arm in Arm, run by Ricky Hawes, is a collection service, including some house clearances, based at a large warehouse in Messines open at weekends and offering free items to needy families and individuals as well as selling items to fund a variety of causes including Bombeiros, orphanages, homeless people and others.
Memory Lane, run by Kelly Harper, supports people and families living with dementia in the Algarve by offering funded social events and gatherings in a supportive environment as well as offering information, understanding and reassurance to those who need it.
