An office has been granted to the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (Associação Portuguesa de Apoio à Vítima, or APAV) by the municipal authority of Albufeira in order to keep the services provided by the association available in the city.
The inauguration took place on September 25 and was witnessed by the then president of the municipal authority of Albufeira, José Carlos Rolo, and the president of APAV, João Lázaro, among other high-ranking local officials.
“These kinds of associations are needed in a society which, in the current economic climate, is registering an increasing amount of complicated situations that require social support and monitoring,” said José Carlos Rolo.
Stressing his commitment to the association’s cause, the Mayor said that the municipality handed over the premises at the “right time” and was sure that APAV would be putting it to good use to the benefit of the community, who will “certainly welcome this improvement”.
The APAV president, on the other hand, showed his gratitude to the municipal authority of Albufeira for its “perseverance and pragmatism” throughout the whole process.
“These premises are an answer to a long-running aspiration to better serve the Albufeira community, specifically victims of crime and abuse. It will allow us to increase the number of volunteers and consequently help more people in terms of prevention and post-crime intervention,” he said.
Albufeira’s previous victim support office, the Gabinete de Apoio à Vítima (GAV), had been running for 13 years in the city centre. During this time, GAV received on average 220 cases per year, in which approximately 500 people were involved.
Now, the new facilities will be located in the Habijovem urbanisation, in a 70sqm office.
