November brings stargazing, light shows and piano recitals to Algarve

Days may be getting shorter and cooler in November but that doesn’t mean you’ll have to spend the month cooped up at home waiting for warmer and longer days to return.

The ‘365 Algarve’ programme has a variety of events to “warm you up” next month, including the debut edition of the star gazing ‘Out-(In)verno Festival’, the return of the Algarve International Festival of Light (LUZA) and fourth International Piano Festival of the Algarve.

Taking place in the inland village of São Marcos da Serra in Silves between November 1 and 3, the ‘Out-(In)verno Festival’ will feature concerts, walks, art exhibitions and several astronomy events.

Halfway through the month (November 14-16), LUZA will be held in Faro for the first time and will be presenting the works of 10 national and international artists who use light as a form of art.

November 16 also marks the start of the International Piano Festival of the Algarve with a performance by pianist Adriano Jordão, maestro Hu Youngyan and the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra at the Tempo theatre in Portimão. The same concert is scheduled the following day at the Teatro das Figuras theatre in Faro.

Other highlights include ‘Medronho – Apanha’, which on the first three days of November will encourage the public to participate in the process of collecting Medronho fruit, used to make the Monchique’s famous Medronho firewater.

Monchique will also host a walk and concert on November 10, included in the ‘Em Canto pela Algarviana’ initiative which sees the Grupo Coral Ossónoba performing along several sections of the Via Algarviana walking trail.

Entertainment is also planned in Aljezur which will host the first shows of ‘O Presente de César’, described as a culinary play that will teach people about Portugal’s favourite fish, codfish, and will also feature “an incredible menu featuring soup, a main course, dessert and wine”.

The event will be held at the headquarters of the Rancho Folclórico do Rogil in Aljezur between November 28 and December 1, before moving onto the Casa do Povo de Alferce in Monchique where it will be held between December 5 and 8.
