A 54-year-old fisherman died after his boat capsized due to a strong wave off Culatra Island in Olhão.
Lúcio Viegas Cabrita was aboard the ‘Alamar’ fishing boat with another fisherman on Christmas Eve morning when the accident happened.
According to Correio da Manhã, the two men were fishing for clams using a scrapping dredge when a wave hit the boat and they fell overboard. The other fisherman was able to swim to shore and call for help.
Olhão Port Captain André Morais told CM that searches were “carried out immediately”, but that the victim was already dead when he was later found near the shore.
His body was retrieved by a boat from the ISN rescue centre and was taken by a Red Cross ambulance to the Faro Hospital morgue where an autopsy was due to take place.
