“No time or money” to investigate alternatives to Montijo as Lisbon’s second airport

There is no time or money to investigate alternative to the option of Montijo airbase as Lisbon’s second airport.

Minister for Planning and Infrastructures Pedro Nuno Santos gave this reason in parliament on Monday in one of the ongoing debates on the 2020 State Budget, saying that everyday Portugal is losing hundreds of millions of euros because of ‘strangulations’ at the capital’s only (Humberto Delgado) airport.

The second terminal in Montijo is “very important for the country”, and shilly-shallying is delaying progress, he said.

In the last 50 years, 17 options have been considered without any one of them going forwards.

“We don’t have the right to continue delaying the development of this country”, said Mr Santos, accepting that ANA airports authority has still to respond to the environmental agency’s demand for a €48 million compensation package (click here).
