Petitions in Portugal now need 7,500 signatures before they qualify to be discussed by MPs in parliament.
President Marcelo has rubber stamped the law that in effect almost doubles the previous requirement (for only 4,000 signatures). MPs initially hoped to increase the signature limit to 10,000 âin the interests of streamlining parliamentary businessâ but the president considered this would send a ânegative signal to Portuguese democracyâ.
