The University of the Algarve (UAlg) continues to be the Portuguese university with the highest percentage of foreign students (6%).
According to data from the Board of Statistics of Education and Science (DGEEC), there were 1,724 foreign pupils studying at the university in 2018/19, a number which grew to 1,865 the following school year (2019/20).
Says the university, the number is also believed to have increased this academic year (2020/21).
“Despite the pandemic and the reduction in the recruitment of new foreign students compared to the 2019/20 school year, data available so far points to an increase in the total number of these students in 2020/21,” the university said in a communiqué to the press.
Most impressive is that the majority of foreign students (79.8%) complete their whole higher education journey at UAlg, while the remainder are mobility students (those who choose to study abroad for a period of time).
Further data shows that Brazilian students account for nearly 11% of the university’s foreign pupil community, with the number growing from 714 to 862 students in the last school year.
