Sixty-two inmates and four prison officers at Faro prison have tested positive for Covid-19, the board of reinsertion and prison services (DGRSP) announced on Sunday.
A contingency plan was put into place after the first prisoner tested positive on Saturday, said the board.
The remaining inmates were quarantined and tested, as well as all prison staff.
By Sunday night, 66 people had tested positive.
The prisoners are said to be asymptomatic, have been moved to the same prison aisle and are being monitored by health professionals.
According to Lusa news agency, there are 351 active cases among 11,226 prisoners in Portugal.
There are also 74 active cases among prison guards, as well as 10 “external employees”.
