Portimonense: Double top!

PORTIMONENSE 2-0 SPORTING LISBON

PORTIMONENSE 2-0 SPORTING BRAGA

Portimonense finally managed confidence-boosting back-to-back wins against top up-and-coming league opposition with clear-cut victories over previously unbeaten Sporting Lisbon and Braga.

Recently arrived forward Yago Cariello only needed three minutes to open the scoring in Lagos last week before Welinton finished off a Sporting XI much changed from the side which had triumphed 3-2 over José Mourinho’s AS Roma at the Stadium of the Algarve the previous day. Also played behind closed doors on Saturday morning in Portimão, just turned 23-years-old Yago, previously with third division Santarem, again found the back of the net, this time adding to Pedro Sá’s earlier strike against Braga.

Portimonense conclude their pre-season ‘friendlies’ with matches against Covilhã (played yesterday, Wednesday, after the Resident went to press) and Estrela da Amadora on Saturday, both in Portimão, before the 2022/23 campaign kicks off in earnest with Boavista providing the opposition at the Municipal Stadium on Sunday, August 7, 8.30pm.

Off the pitch, Portimonense will have to make do without latest ‘signing’ Everton Felipe, the 24-year-old deciding to stay with Sport Recife at the last possible moment after the deal had already been reported as done and dusted.

Also, Angulo, a first team regular last season, will not extend his stay in the Algarve, opting for a move to the US MLS instead. Manager Paulo Sérgio will thus continue to be on the look-out for at least one experienced midfielder as well as a winger before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.
