Workers in Portugal’s fish canning industry are on strike today, demanding higher wages, regulated working hours and against ‘casual employment’. Says Lusa, the strike involves around 4,000 workers at canneries in Matosinhos, Figueira da Foz, Peniche and Olhão in the Algarve. It has been called by FESAHT, the Federation of Workers in Agriculture, Food, Beverages, Hospitality and Tourism of Portugal. FESAHT claims that since the pandemic, workers have been pushed to work longer hours, putting their personal health at risk, not to mention quality of service. The federation wants a 35-hour working week established.
