Unemployment rises for 5th consecutive month

2022 ended with 307,005 unemployed people registered at job centres throughout country, which represents an increase (this time of 10,282) for the 5th consecutive month. In this ‘universe’ of unemployed people, reports indicate there are 4,879 families in which both wage earners are out of a job. This is a ‘tendency’ that IEFP (the institute of employment and professional training) that has been increasing since September 2022. It has to be stressed that unemployment figures are not ‘the whole picture’ as unemployment benefit in Portugal is finite. Long-term unemployed lose their right to it. Also, people who have not been employed sufficiently long before becoming unemployed can find themselves unable even to qualify for unemployment benefit.
