Armindo Monteiro, the new president of CIP .- the confederation of Portuguese industry – has hit out at the level of taxation in this country which, he recognises, is asphyxiating the economy. It is not a new observation, but in the context of private enterprise, Monteiro stresses, nothing can change until the State has a proper plan for companies. “We were never stimulated to be a rich country”, he told a conference organised by SEDES and the Order of Engineers. The State “wants investment” but then “fights capital”, he blasted in one of his first interventions since taking over from previous incumbent António Saraiva.
