The adviser to the Portuguese communities in Johannesburg, Vasco Pinto de Abreu, has defended equal rights and integration for people of Portuguese descent in Portugal, as happens already for immigrants from the CPLP (community of Portuguese-speaking countries) and Europe. “Lusodescendants mainly should be given opportunities and it should be made easier for them to go to Portugal to do their internships and to graduate from universities,” Pinto de Abreu tells Lusa, adding the policy would be “an asset for Portugal” as South Africans are “highly qualified in medicine, engineering, everything, and even the law”.
