Marcelo wishes Javier Milei “every success” for term that begins next month
Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has congratulated Javier Milei today on his election as head of State of the Republic of Argentina, wishing him “every success” for the term that begins in December.
In a statement released today, the Presidency of the Republic quotes Portugal’s head of State insisting the country “will continue to invest in the bilateral relationship, for the benefit of the citizens of both countries”, strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite them and “finding new opportunities for its development and deepening at all levels, as well as within the framework of the Ibero-American Conference”.
Javier Milei, of the right-wing La Libertad Avanza party, won on Sunday with 55.69% (14.5 million votes) of the vote against 44.30% (11.5 million votes) for the Minister of the Economy, Sergio Tomás Massa, after a 76% turnout.
He has been “likened to Wolverine and (Donald) Trump and nicknamed ‘the madman’”, writes the international press, adding that the former TV pundit is known for his “prolific swearing and pledge to take a chainsaw to the machinery of state”.
The shots of him demonstrating this last ambition, enthusiastically wielding a chainsaw in front of a crowd on the campaign trail, went viral as Argentina prepared to go to the polls.
Milei is due to take office as President of Argentina for the next four years on December 10, succeeding Peronist Alberto Fernández.
