Step-father in police custody
A seven month old baby is in a critical condition in hospital after being stabbed repeatedly in Mirandela, Bragança district.
The infant’s step-father has been arrested, and is being held by police.
According to reports, local firefighters received a call for help around midnight last night. By the time they arrived at the address in Vila Nova das Patas, the baby was unconscious.
Said firefighter chief Luís Soares, the tiny victim had “multiple traumas to his chest and stomach”.
According to Soares, the “aggressions were perpetuated by the baby’s 37-year-old stepfather”.
The infant was airlifted to hospital in Porto in a “very delicate” clinical situation. A source at the hospital has since confirmed the baby is ‘critical, but at this moment stable’. He arrived by INEM helicopter at 2.30am.
The case is now in the hands of the PJ judicial police.
The baby’s 19-year-old mother also suffered light injuries in the same attack. She has been treated in hospital in Bragança. ND
