Lisbon has been chosen as the European Capital of Innovation 2023, a distinction awarded by the European Commission and bringing with it a ‘prize’ of €1 million. Mayor Carlos Moedas believes the award comes “thanks to the Unicorn Factory” and the “incredible work” the city has achieved over the last two years in attracting “more than 54 technology companies” and “12 unicorns” (companies that reach a value of $1 billion). He says the money means Lisbon can “invest even more, invest in innovation that changes people’s lives”.
