Boardwalk has been hailed a “real success”
The Parish Council of Alferce has celebrated the success of the recently-inaugurated local boardwalk, which has already been visited over 30,000 times.
“The Barranco do Demo boardwalk is a real success! So far, we’ve recorded more than 30,000 passages. Many thanks to everyone who has visited us,” the parish council said in a post on its Facebook page, posting several photos of the boardwalk.
The 800m boardwalk along with a suspended bridge were built in the Barranco do Demo gorge – sometimes referred to by locals as the ‘Grand Canyon of Alferce’ – and are part of a larger 6km walking trail which links the village to the local castle.
Officially inaugurated in October, the new tourist attraction was part of a larger €450,000 project aimed at developing the parish.
José Manuel Gonçalves, President of the Alferce Parish Council, told the Resident in March that another goal was to improve the “economic and demographic sustainability” of Alferce, which continues fighting against desertification, by promoting the creation of “new businesses, fixating new residents and sustainable investments” and generally contributing to the “global development of the parish.”
