Workshop by animal physiotherapy specialist Irmela Kuhn
Woofland by Iron Dog at Mar Shopping Algarve in Loulé will host a workshop entitled ‘Physiotherapy for Animals: Fundamentals, Effects and Possibilities’ on Saturday, January 27 at 6pm.
The course will cover the basic concepts of physiotherapy applied to animals, as well as practical advice which can be used in emergency or everyday situations.
Everything from the concept of physiotherapy for animals all the way to its benefits and when it should be used will be tackled during the workshop, which aims to “enable animal owners to anticipate and prevent health issues in their animals and learn to apply some techniques to improve their overall quality of life”.
The workshop will be led by Irmela Kuhn, a 50-year-old German animal physiotherapy specialist. She completed her veterinary nursing studies in 1991 and qualified as an X-ray technician in 1997 before completing her training in physiotherapy at Akademie für Tierphysiotherapie GBR in Germany in 2010.
Irmela has lived in Portugal since 2002 and has been working as a veterinarian nurse since 2006. She also has a course in manual therapy in horses and the use of leeches for therapeutic purposes in dogs and horses.
“Through her extensive knowledge and experience, Irmela has helped dozens of animals in Barão de São Miguel, Lagos, from dogs to donkeys, horses and cats, treating common problems usually related to old age such as arthritis, spondylosis, or hernias, as well as muscle problems related to ligaments, using massages, manual therapies or electrotherapy, in addition to several preventive actions,” says Woofland by Iron Dog.
According to Irmela, physiotherapy applied to animals is still a relatively recent field in Portugal, although it is already well developed in other countries.
“Unfortunately, most people do not have the will, knowledge, or economic power to provide this type of treatment to their animals,” she said.
However, despite “the reality having changed a lot in recent years”, most of Irmela’s clients are still foreigners. Nevertheless, Irmela hopes that, through this course, she can reach even more people so that they can acquire the knowledge to help their own animals.
