Portugal’s top ranked tennis player, Nuno Borges (69th in the ATP rankings), achieved his best result in Grand Slam tournaments on Thursday, beating Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (24th) in three sets to qualify for the third round of the Australian Open.
Borges has become the third Portuguese player to reach the third round of the ‘Happy Slam’, after Frederico Gil and João Sousa.
He is now hoping to continue the streak with a win against Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov (13th) on Saturday.
