The government has defended a change in regulations governing the awarding of State funds to university students living away from home. Insertion of the word “or” ensures that students who live, for example, with family friends/ relatives, must declare those friends’/ relatives’ income – in addition to the income of their own families (with whom they are not living). This ensures that the aggregate ‘income’ is ‘too high’ for the student to qualify for State benefit, and has already seen a number of young people lose this advantage, say reports.
