Festival will showcase the region’s famous almond blossoms
It’s almost time for the third edition of ‘Festival das Amendoeiras em Flor’, an event inspired by the Algarve’s stunning almond blossoms which will take place between Friday and Sunday (February 2-4) in the small village of Alta Mora, Castro Marim.
There will be no shortage of entertainment, from four hikes ranging from 5km to 20km to a wide range of musical performances, with artists and groups spanning multiple genres from folk and world music to flamenco.
The entertainment programme also features live theatrical and dance performances, a photography exhibition showcasing the previous edition, and activities for children such as face painting, traditional games, a petting zoo, donkey rides and performances by living statues.
Another highlight promises to be the unveiling of a 42-metre-long almond cake, created by students from the Hotel and Tourism School of Vila Real de Santo António.
Visitors will also be able to visit a street market featuring food and crafts stalls or enrol in a series of bread-making, basketry and almond tree planting workshops.
Organised by the Recreational, Cultural, and Sports Association of Friends of Alta Mora (ARCDAA), the festival is described as a “strategic and promotional initiative for the traditions and identity of the region, aiming to combat the desertification of the Algarve mountains.”
Tickets cost €3 for adults and €2 for children aged 11 to 14, while admission is free for children up to the age of 10.

The festival is taking place less than two months after a stark warning was made concerning the future of the region’s almond blossoms, as drought has led to a decrease in the number of almond tree plantations.
