Following the early January panic over ‘excess deaths’ and rising flu cases, the picture is calming considerably. Recent data from the Ricardo Jorge (public health) institute shows “endemic flu activity with decreasing tendency”, and “signs of relief” in the number of hospital admissions. The number of deaths – which peaked from mid-December to January 21, seeing 3,300 more than expected – have returned to levels considered ‘normal’ for this time of year.
