CAP, the Confederation of Portuguese Farmers (CAP) has applauded the European Commission’s withdrawal of the proposal to halve pesticides in agriculture by 2030, considering that the bill was “mortally wounded” and threatened the viability of many producers. “The proposal in question had already been rejected by the European Parliament, which shows that it was, in its origin, mortally wounded and did not meet with the agreement of member States,” a source has told Lusa. The confederation said the proposal – “conceived behind the backs of European farmers” – set targets for reducing the risk and use of pesticides by 2030 “which, because they were so demanding, jeopardised the viability of the activity of many producers”.
