First stone laid at Guia’s future care home

Local council invests €4 million in new facility

Last week saw the first stone being laid at Guia’s future care home, which will be built on a 3,791sqm plot of land near the existing Senhora da Visitação home in Sítio das Cortelhas.

The project represents an investment of just over €4 million “completely funded” by the municipal council of Albufeira, although a bid for community funding has been launched.

“This is a project that aims to improve the health and the life quality of the citizens of Albufeira,” local mayor José Carlos Rolo said at the first stone ceremony on February 15.

The new building will replace the current home for temporary or permanent residents which is part of the National Network of Integrated Continued Care and is based at the Albufeira health centre under the management of the António Silva Leal Foundation.

With two floors, the building will have 20 rooms divided into 12 double rooms, four individual rooms and four triple rooms with a capacity for 40 residents. The care home will also have a day care centre with a capacity for another 20 people.

“The goal is to support the recovery of people who are dependants, which is why it will offer services such as speech therapy, physiotherapy and other therapies which help prolong people’s lives with some quality” said José Carlos Rolo, adding that the care home will be focused on “promoting life and reintegrating people who depend on care.”

Construction of the care home is expected to last 510 days, meaning if all goes according to plan it could open before 2026.
