Snowfall warning issued for north of Portugal
Meteorologists in Portugal are predicting rain and much colder temperatures for the following days, marking a return to more winter-like weather.
The change in weather will be caused by a cold front which will bring rainfall and stronger winds with it by the end of this Wednesday (February 21) in the Minho and Douro coastal areas and by Thursday (February) across the country, explained meteologist Cristina Simões from Portugal’s sea and atmosphere institute IPMA.
The institute has also issued a snowfall warning between 9pm on Thursday and 7pm on Friday in the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, and Braga.
Caution is also being advised in coastal areas as rough seas are expected, with yellow and orange alerts already issued along the entire Portuguese coastline between Thursday and Friday.
Simões also announced a major decrease in temperatures, starting with drops of four to six degrees this Wednesday, two to three on Thursday and another drop on Friday. “In total, temperatures should drop almost 10 degrees,” the meteorologist predicted.
In other words, the unusually mild (and in some cases warm) temperatures that have been marking the month of February will make way for the type of cold, winter weather that is usually the norm.
