Algarve beach named best in the world by Tripadvisor

The Algarve’s planned desalination plant is to be built near the beach

Albufeira’s stunning Praia da Falésia has been hailed the best beach in the world in the 2024 edition of Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards.

“The Travelers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best title celebrates the highest level of excellence in travel,” Tripadvisor explains, adding that it is awarded to” those who receive a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from the Tripadvisor community over a 12-month period. Out of our 8 million listings, fewer than 1% achieve this milestone.”

The Algarve beach leads the ‘Best of the Best Beaches’ list, with a 4.5 out of 5 score based on 5,901 reviews.

“Praia da Falésia is known for its dramatic cliffs, golden sands, and sparkling blue waters. Sunbathe on the huge shore, go swimming or body surfing in the waves, or stroll along the scenic footpath on top of the cliffs and check out the incredible views. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag recognition for its cleanliness, plus there are restrooms, a snack bar, and it’s easy to get to via public transportation,” Tripadvisor writes in its description of the beach.

No other Portuguese beach made the top-25, with second place going to Spiaggia dei Conigli in Italy and third to La Concha in Spain.

Readers may recall that the Algarve’s planned desalination plant is due to be built near the beach, a project which is being condemned for its potentially “disastrous” environmental effects – not to mention the impact it would have on the area’s now internationally-renowned natural beauty.
