AD targets PS for failing to prepare Algarve for drought

The head of AD says nothing has been done in eight years of PS leadership

Luís Montenegro, president of PSD and head of the Aliança Democrática coalition which is looking to oust the Socialist Party (PS) in the upcoming legislative election, has criticised PS for failing to prepare the Algarve to face its drought situation.

“In the last eight years no investments were made, no dams were built, no new pipes were set up, (…) steps were not taken to address (the region’s) needs which were already known,” Montenegro told reporters during a visit to Portimão’s municipal market on Thursday.

“Now, at the eleventh hour, they are punishing people, families and companies with higher costs and even the possibility of a reduction in (water) supply,” the leader of the main opposition party said.

His criticism continued, stating that PS pitches many ideas “but then does not follow through”.

“It becomes embarrassing to see (PS leader) Pedro Nuno Santos wanting to be perceived as someone who gets things done, when he has become a good mistake maker,” Montenegro said.

One issue that has been making headlines between the leaders of the country’s two main political parties is the question of whether each one will enable the formation of a minority government should either party win the election without an absolute majority.

While Pedro Nuno Santos has showed a willingness to do so (having nonetheless changed his stance several times over the last few days), Luís Montenegro has kept his cards closer to his chest, instead criticising his opponent for “not letting go” of this topic.

“How is it possible to have four different versions of the same subject in two days? This shows a lack of preparation, an immaturity, and a lack of capacity to lead a government,” said the head of AD, the coalition which brings together PSD, CDS-PP and PPM.
