Parties unanimous in salary rises for Armed Forces

A radio debate between parties with seats in parliament has shown every single one is in favour of increasing pay and improving conditions in the Armed Forces – a vital commitment considering news that the military is so frustrated by lack of investment that it is reportedly ready to ‘protest in the streets’. One notable aspect of the debate was PSD’s reluctance to commit to NATO’s ‘required 2% of GDP’ to be spent by allied countries on defence, on the basis that this was not ‘possible’ in the first legislature (ie next four years). PS’ Pedro Nuno Santos however said he was committed to meeting deadlines agreed with international partners.
