New attempt to remove boat from Ferragudo beach

Stranded boats continue to spark people’s curiosity

Authorities will attempt in March to remove the largest of the three boats which are stranded at Praia Grande in Ferragudo.

Speaking to Lusa news agency, the mayor of Lagoa he has authorised another attempt to remove Thor, a 35-metre long pleasure craft which is the “most worrying case” due to its larger size.

The other two smaller sailing boats that are stuck on the beach should also be removed soon: Lady Stray (Swedish flag) washed ashore in October and Ran (Polish flag) ran aground on the same day as Thor, on January 17, due to strong winds and the unusual strength of the tides.

As Lusa points out, the three boats have become something of a ‘tourist attraction’, especially at the weekend, when many people travel the beach to see the beached vessels and take photos.

The beach is located on the left bank of the Arade estuary, just before the sea protection jetty and opposite Portimão, which is on the other side of the river.

Providing further context, Luís Encarnação said that one of the sailboats, Lady Stray, was abandoned by the owners, who haven’t paid its insurance. This has led the council to move forward with its removal soon at its own expense.

As for Thor and Ran, their owners are responsible for the removal procedures.

Thor is due to be removed between March 11 and 12 due to the next high tide that coincides with a new moon or full moon, which will help in the work to remove the vessel.
