Last day of political campaigning sees party headquarters daubed in angry slogans

Climate activists complain no political group has plans to stop fossil fuels by 2030

The final day of frantic political campaigning ahead of Sunday’s legislative elections have seen various party headquarters daubed in angry slogans by climate activists.

Greve Climática Estudantil claims no party has plans to stop the use of fossil fuels in Portugal by 2030 (the date activists themselves have set). Their actions targeted the left wing parties, PS, Bloco de Esquerda and LIVRE, while the headquarters of CHEGA received no slogans, but a liberal spattering of red paint.

Matilda Ventura (no relation as far as one can tell to CHEGA leader André Ventura), the ‘spokesperson’ of this latest round of protests, stressed that the elections on Sunday will be giving a mandate to 2028 – and that “this is the last mandate to resolve the climate crisis. To have no plan to end fossil fuels by 2030 is to condemn our future. It is to condemn thousands to death”, she “guarantees”, writes SIC Notícias.

For the future, the group equally “guarantees” to “give no peace to institutions” until their objective is achieved. In May, explain reports, the group has a new round of protests planned under the banner “Student Spring for End to Fossil Fuel”.
