Oncologist Jorge Espírito Santo has applauded the recent approval by INFARMED (Portugal’s medicines authority) of four new medical products using cannabis to relieve suffering of cancer patients, epileptics and people with multiple sclerosis. He said it was a much safer way of using cannabis that ‘clandestinely’, as this way, doses are scientifically gauged, “without being mixed with other foreign molecules”. His answer to Portugal being some way behind other countries with regard to the medical use of cannabis the retired chief of service said: “There is a way to go, but it is better (to start late) than never”.
